Hunter Valley Wine Experiences
Every tour here is built from the same handful of components in a different order. This is what each one involves, how long it takes and who it suits, so you can read an itinerary and know what you are getting.
A seated tasting, from the first pour
The core of every day in the valley, and it follows a shape.
You are seated at the counter or a table, and given the list. Five to seven wines is standard.
Whites first, usually Semillon, then Chardonnay or Verdelho, and the pours are small by design.
Reds follow, Shiraz above all, sometimes with a museum release to show what age does.
A sweet or fortified wine closes it, and nobody expects you to finish anything.
The tasting fee is $10 to $25 at most estates and is included in every guided fare here. Small estates will often waive it if you buy a bottle.
Wine and cheese, matched
What it is. A structured pairing, not a cheese board beside a glass. The Two Fat Blokes Gourmet Kitchen runs the best-known version: seven cheeses against seven wines, worked through in order with somebody explaining each match.
Included on. The Pokolbin half-day and the Uncork the Hunter full day.
Best for. Anyone who has drunk plenty of wine and never understood why a particular cheese makes a Shiraz taste different.
Wine and chocolate, matched
What it is. A short pairing at the Hunter Valley Chocolate Company or an artisan chocolatier, usually 20 to 30 minutes.
Included on. Four of the guided days, including the coach day from Sydney and the wine, cheese and chocolate tour.
Best for. The mid-afternoon slot when the palate has had enough tannin. It is also the stop that works for a non-drinker in the group.
Gin, vodka and the valley distillers
What it is. A spirits flight at a small distillery between cellar doors — Small Mouth Vodka in Lovedale is the one most tours use.
Included on. The boutique local tour and the wine, cheese and chocolate day, and available at no extra charge on the luxury six-hour tour.
Best for. Mixed groups. It reliably rescues the person who came along for the drive.
Lunch: grazing box, cafe or two courses
What it is. Three different answers, and the one your tour uses changes the shape of the day. A grazing box travels with the group. A cafe lunch is a stop with a menu. A two-course paired lunch is a sit-down at a country manor.
Included on. Uncork the Hunter carries the grazing box; the coach day includes two courses at voco Kirkton Park; the scenic day covers a cafe lunch valued at $25. On the rest, lunch is free time at your own cost.
Best for. Long days. The tours that include lunch are the ones that never stall at 1pm while everyone hunts for a table.

Which experience is you
The cheese matching. Seven pairings explained in order teaches more in an hour than five cellar doors will.
The coach day from Sydney, where two courses at a country manor are paired and already paid for.
The boutique local tour: three seated tastings plus a gin and vodka flight, capped at ten people.
The wine and cheese tasting at McCaffrey's Estate — no bus, no timetable, and children are welcome.
Pick the day that matches
Each guided day lists the tastings, pairings and lunch it includes, so you can book the experience rather than the itinerary.
Hunter Valley: Uncork the Hunter Full-Day Wine Tour
The food-led full day: a cheese and wine masterclass, a chocolate matching and a gourmet grazing box, seven hours entirely inside the valley.
